This concern felt by Yann Méhieux, chairman for the protection of victims of the multi-vehicle pile-up on the A10 motorway at Saint-Martial-de-Miranbeau (15 fatalities, 53 injured) has long been shared by Pascal Barguirdjian, founder of Tecknisolar-Seni, a research laboratory based at Saint-Malo. It was in fact in 1993 that this engineer perfected and manufactured self-contained illuminated solar powered signs capable of operating both in summer and winter, seven days a week (the advantages of this: no further need to dig trenches to bury electric cables). He went on the next year to design a motorway pile-up detection system built into the crash barrier.
